The Perfect Coffee Table A coffee table is often the missing piece of furniture that will complete a room. Today there are coffee tables in all styles, from chic and modern, to classic or contemporary. Whatever your style is, there is sure to be a coffee table that will match it. The only problem with choosing the right table is that there are so many different styles to choose from.
Color The best way to start selecting the right coffee table is to think about which color will match your furniture. If you have furniture with wood trim, then try to pick a table that has the same color as the trim. For leather furniture, opt for a table that accentuates the furniture perfectly. A glass table works amazingly well with leather furniture, especially pieces in dark colors. Another good choice is a leather ottoman table, which usually has storage underneath.
Material After choosing the best color for your furniture, then it is time to think about material. Those who have their hearts set on a wood coffee table will be rather limited to the wood that is the same color as their furniture. Of course cherry wood has either a slight reddish color or a dark brown color, depending on how deep of a cherry wood you choose. Mahogany tends to be extremely dark, while oak is a much lighter color. Just keep in mind that cherry wood is softer than oak, so shoppers who have large dogs or children who are rough on furniture may prefer a harder wood like oak.
Another thing to keep in mind about wood is that not all tables are solid wood. A solid wood table will be much more durable and last a lot longer. However, you will also pay extra for that solid wood. Shoppers wanting to save a little cash on a coffee table will prefer an RTA, or ready to assemble table. Also a solid wood table is much heavier than a ready to assemble table, so it will be more difficult to move. Style Next shoppers should start thinking about style. A glass coffee table is very contemporary, but it may be rather fragile. Look for one with chrome legs, which will ensure that the table will last a long time. Wood tables can also come in various styles, from very contemporary to extremely classic.
Some wood tables even have panes in the top of them. One of the most popular styles of coffee tables right now is a wood table with panes of either glass or tile in them. If you are one of the many people who are looking for a table in this style, just look carefully at the construction of the table before purchasing. Some of these tables have tiles that can easily come out or fall out, and they are not made for homes with very small children and curious fingers. Saving Money There are a couple of ways to save money on a table. One of the easiest ways to save some money is to purchase a set. Many tables come in sets with two end tables, which not only ensures that your end tables match, but also saves money in the long run.
The major pieces of furniture in your living room can be quite an investment. As such, you’re likely to hold onto a sofa, love seat or even an occasional chair for quite a long time, if for no other reason that you want to get your money’s worth.
While you may have to live with your upholstered furniture for a while, you can still do a makeover using accent furniture. These are smaller pieces in the room that are often less expensive. As such, you can replace them more often than your signature pieces that have a longer shelf life.
The best place to start is with your tables. If you want a new look for the room end tables and a coffee table change out will go a long way toward giving your living room an entirely new look. Best of all, you don’t even need to buy them all at the same time. Like most accent furniture, you can build up your collection over time. For example, you can choose to pick up a new coffee table and replace the end tables later on when you find the perfect ones. They don’t have to all match either, well, at least in the classical sense. You want to match at least one dominant aspect – the style, the material used, the ornamentation, the shape… something that will visually tie one table to another.
Another great piece of accent furniture is a small chest. You can use it as an additional seating option, as a coffee table or ottoman, or simply place it in a corner and load it up with blankets for a cold winter’s night. Unlike your major pieces, accent furniture can be functional as well, solving such major problems as a shortage of places to sit or not enough storage.
Chairs are another great choice for accent furniture, largely for the same reason as a chest, additional seating. You can choose lovely occasional chairs that will add visual interest to the room, complementing your love seat, sofa or sectional with similar colors or architectural elements. You can also make these playful in nature, creating a contrast with your more formal pieces of furniture.
If display space is an issue, you can add an étagère to the room, or perhaps a bookcase or curio cabinet. These are ideal for displaying your collections, souvenirs or family photos. Because you can get them in a range of sizes, they will fit in places you may have never been able to add a piece of furniture before. For example, many étagères are made to fit into corners, one of the least used parts of a room.
If storage is still a concern, considere adding another great piece of accent furniture, an armoire. While armoires were originally intended to serve as extra closet space in homes, they have morphed over the years. Today you can get armoires that double as entertainment centers or even home offices. The home office desks are particularly ingenious, opening up like origami to provide additional workspace, pullouts for your printers and scanners and drawers that hold your files. When you need to work, open up the armoire. When company arrives, simply push everything back in and close the door. You don’t even have to worry about leaving a messy desk behind as no one can see it.
As you can see, it’s easy to give your living room a whole new look when you decide to live with your major furnishings a little bit longer and change up the smaller pieces instead. Do it one at a time or all at once, it’s one of the less expensive redecorating projects you can undertake on a budget.
